Marlin

The marlin is one of the most iconic and sought-after species in sport fishing in Costa Rica. There are three main types found in Costa Rican waters: the blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), the black marlin (Istiompax indica), and the striped marlin (Kajikia audax). They are characterized by their large size, hydrodynamic body, powerful dorsal fin, and distinctive long, sharp bill, which they use to stun their prey.

In Costa Rica, marlins are primarily found in the Pacific Ocean, with top fishing spots including Quepos, Jacó, Herradura, Guanacaste, and the Osa Peninsula. They typically inhabit deep, warm waters but can also be found near underwater mountains or ocean currents rich in small fish and squid, their main food sources.

The best season for marlin fishing varies by species. Blue and black marlins are most abundant from December to April, while striped marlins are more common between May and September. These fish are highly valued for their strength, speed, and spectacular leaps when caught.

Costa Rica promotes sustainable fishing with the “catch and release” practice to ensure marlin conservation and maintain the appeal of sport fishing tourism in the country.
